What are the Dolomites and why visit them
The Dolomites are a breathtaking UNESCO-listed mountain range located in Northern-East Italy known for distinctive jagged peaks, lush green valleys, and crystal-clear lakes, including the world-famous Lago di Braies and Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Think of countless hiking trails, breathtaking views, fresh mountain air and crystal clear alpine lakes, as well as skiing opportunities. Every twist and turn leads to views so incredible, you’ll be convinced they can’t be real.
In addition, the Dolomites also offer quaint alpine villages and charming towns to explore, as well as beautiful valleys and passes and some great hiking, biking and climbing opportunities.
Where are the Dolomites
The Dolomites are located in North-Eastern Italy, stretching between three regions: Veneto, Trentino and Alto Adige for an area of over 350 square km.
The closest international airport is Venice making it an ideal starting point for a day trip to the Dolomites.

Getting to the Dolomites from Venice
Join a guided Dolomites day trip from Venice
When it comes to how to get to the Dolomites from Venice there are many options you can consider, but the easiest and most handy of them all is to join a guided tour.
Just show up at the pickup point and enjoy your day without any worries. Guided tours also offer a great way to meet fellow travelers and enhance your experience if you enjoy socializing.
Take a private Dolomites day tour from Venice
If you prefer exploring on your own, but don’t want to organize everything by yourself, a private guided tour is your go to! It’s a more personal, insightful and quieter experience compared to group tours, which can make your day visit to the Dolomites unforgettable.
Drive from Venice to the Dolomites
If you are more the adventurous type and like to explore at your own pace, you might want to rent a car and drive from Venice to and around the Dolomites yourself.
Keep in mind that the roads are winding and narrow so make sure you are confident with your driving skills. Also, finding parking at the main tourist attractions can be hard and driving long hours can be tiring.
While renting a car is a great option if you are spending more days in the region, it might not be the best option if you only have a day.
Avoid Public transport
There are shuttle buses from Venice to Cortina, but traveling by public transport is more time consuming and harder to organize. This is why I do not recommend it if you only have one day.

There are plenty of incredible hikes in the Dolomites and going on a hike is the best way to experience the breathtaking landscapes of the Dolomites. If you only have time for one, my recommendation is Tre Cime Loop and Cadini di Misurina viewpoint.
This hiking tour from Venice is a great opportunity to experience and hike the Dolomites with a local guide, while this private hiking experience is the best to hike Tre Cime di Lavaredo with a local guide.

Hit the trails on two wheels and experience the adrenaline rush of downhill biking in the Dolomites rugged terrain. This Sellaronda guided bike tour is stunning and well organized.

Try Rock climbing
If you have a bit more time to spend in the Dolomites and are the adventurous type, test your skills on the rock faces of the Dolomites Peaks!
This is one of my favorite ways to take in the views. Make sure you have the right gear or book a guide to go climbing with. If you are skilled enough you can climb the smaller one of Tre Cime! This private climbing tour will take you around the best crags in Cortina.

Go on a Via Ferrata
For the ones who love hiking but with a bit of adventure, a via ferrata is a must! Gear is easier to rent and less experience is required than climbing. One of the most stunning via ferratas is Gran Cir, which is not too hard or Piccolo Cir which is shorter but still very nice.
This Via Ferrata guided group experience or private experience are great alternatives if you want to avoid the stress of organizing one on your own, the guide will choose the best route for you depending on your needs and linking.

Make it a cultural experience
The Dolomites are not just stunning views. The cultural heritage of this region is beyond huge. Old towns and villages, outstanding architecture and churches, farms and meadows, local food and wines are the core of the people here.
You should definitely eat in some rifugios and visit local farms and get a taste of the local cheese to make your experience more genuine and wholesome.
Relax in a spa
After a day of outdoor adventures, unwind in one of the luxurious spa resorts in the Dolomites for some well-deserved relaxation and rejuvenation!
One of the most beautiful spas is QC Terme Dolomiti, in Val di Fassa. Or book a hotel with a wellness center, there are many great stays in the Dolomites.
Take part in winter activities
Needless to say, if you are visiting in winter or shoulder season the best activities to do are the ones related to snow: skiing, snowboarding, ski touring (Sellaronda guided ski tour is such an iconic one!) freeriding or going on a snowmobile experience adventure.
This guided snowshoe hike to Tre Cime di Lavaredo is one of the best you can do in winter!
The Dolomites are home to some world-class skiing and snowboarding ski resorts and are a winter paradise for the ones who love to shred.
Go Paragliding
I admit, this one is a bit extreme but if you love adventure, paragliding is one activity you should really try! Soar high above the mountains and take in the panoramic views of the Dolomites from a bird’s eye perspective. One of the best spots for Paragliding is Seceda.
