8:00 AM: Piazza Duomo & Duomo di Milano

Kick off your day in the heart of Milan at the Piazzo Duomo, dominated by the stunning Duomo di Milano. This Gothic cathedral took over six centuries to complete and today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Inside, you’ll be greeted by stunning frescoes, radiant stained glass, and an archaeological site beneath, showcasing remnants of early Christian baptisteries and an ancient Roman city.

What I love most about the Duomo is the opportunity to climb to the rooftop. The views are breathtaking, overlooking the city with the spires of the cathedral reaching for the sky.

Skip the line and join this guided tour of the Duomo and rooftop. Or even better, opt for this combo tour to combine your Duomo visit with a city walking tour and The Last Supper.

milan bernardino alle ossa - Lombardy, Milan

10:00 AM: Santuario di San Bernardino alle Ossa

Just a short walk from the Duomo, you’ll find one of Milan’s most bizarre yet fascinating churches—San Bernardino alle Ossa.

This church houses an eerie yet intriguing ossuary chapel, its walls are adorned with human skulls and bones arranged in artistic ways. These remains likely belonged to patients from a nearby hospital and to the dead from old cemeteries that were closed.

The skulls encased in boxes above the entrance are believed to be those of condemned souls. If that wasn’t spine-chilling enough, look up to see a ceiling frescoed by Sebastiano Ricci, a Venetian Baroque maestro.

11:00 AM: Piazza Mercanti

Next, head over to Piazza Mercanti, a charming medieval square surrounded by stunning architecture.

This piazza once served as the bustling center for Milan’s merchants during the Middle Ages. As you stroll through, check out the Palazzo della Ragione and the Loggia degli Osii.

Last stop before lunch is Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.  This 19th-century shopping arcade, named after Italy’s first king, Victor Emmanuel II, is one of Europe’s oldest malls. The intricate glass ceiling and shimmering floors make for an unforgettable sight.

As a tradition, don’t miss the chance to spin three times on the bull of Torino’s intimate parts for good luck!

If you’re a fan of Leonardo da Vinci, the Leonardo3 exhibition offers a fascinating insight into his inventions, so make sure to grab tickets ahead of time.

Now, don’t let the posh setting fool you—this is a food court where you can grab a cheap pizza margherita from a chain or splurge on a juicy steak. The setting is lovely, and the views will certainly make your meal memorable.

2:00 PM: Leonardo da Vinci Museum

After lunch, make your way to the Leonardo da Vinci Museum, housed in the former Olivetan monastery of San Vittore. This museum blends art and science, showcasing models of da Vinci’s inventions alongside groundbreaking technologies.

3:00 PM: Santa Maria delle Grazie & Last Supper

Next, visit Santa Maria delle Grazie to see one of the world’s most famous masterpieces: The Last Supper fresco by Leonardo da Vinci.

This stunning fresco painted in the late 15th century, captures the exact moment Jesus drops the bombshell that one of his disciples will betray him.

Due to its fragile state, the number of daily visitors is limited, so securing your tickets early is essential. While it may cost a bit more, booking a Last Supper tour is well worth it for the insightful context you’ll gain and ensures you get tickets.

Maximize your visit by joining this walking tour that includes tickets to the Duomo and The Last Supper.

Time to dive into some history at the Castello Sforzesco, a magnificent fortress with a rich background as a military stronghold and royal palace. Today, it’s a popular tourist attraction, not just for its impressive architecture but also for its fascinating exhibitions.

Sempione Park connects the castle to the Arco della Pace. This sprawling park is perfect for relaxation, offering beautiful lawns and tree-lined paths. Spanning nearly 400,000 square meters, it’s one of Milan’s largest green spaces.

I loved sitting down for a coffee at one of the park’s cafes, soaking in the serene atmosphere. For stunning views of Milan climb up Branca Tower located in the park.

Venture to the Arco della Pace, perched on the edge of Parco Sempione and opposite Castello Sforzesco. Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte to celebrate the French victory at the Battle of Marengo, this white marble arch designed by Luigi Cagnola is truly a sight to behold!

8:PM Dinner in Chinatown

End the stay with something different and head to Milan’s Chinatown, a lively and diverse area combining Italian and Chinese cultures, famous for its genuine Chinese restaurants, bustling markets, and cultural activities.

For an authentic dining experience, visit Ravioleria Sarpi, a well-liked restaurant known for its handmade dumplings and classic Chinese dishes. Alternatively, Jingji offers the best Sichuan cuisine and a friendly atmosphere.

4:00 PM: Armani/Silos and/or Prada Foundation

Set in a former grain silo, this museum houses over 600 pieces showcasing the evolution of Armani’s designs since the 1970s. I was particularly struck by the striking power suits that defined the 1980s—it’s incredible to see how fashion reflects culture and identity.

If you’re a contemporary art lover, don’t miss the Prada Foundation. Founded by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, this complex is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of art, culture, and architecture. Evening: Apericena in Navigli

End your day by diving into Milan’s vibrant aperitivo culture—but with a twist! Welcome to apericena!

It’s like traditional aperitivo but leveled up, with massive cocktails and endless buffet options. You won’t need dinner after this feast, trust me! The term “cena” in aperi-cena means dinner in Italian, and that’s what this evening experience feels like.

For the ultimate apericena experience, head to Naviglio Pavese—this canal area is the heart of Milan’s nightlife and offers the perfect setting to unwind after an exciting day out and about.

For the best experience join this aperitivo and street food tour or combine sightseeing with an aperitivo on this sunset bike tour.

Bosco Verticale milan - Lombardy, Milan

2:30 PM: Piazza Gae Aulenti & Bosco Verticale

Following lunch, head to Piazza Gae Aulenti at the other end of Corso Como. This modern square showcases some of Milan’s boldest architecture. It is home to a cluster of impressive skyscrapers, including the Unicredit Tower, Italy’s tallest building and the iconic Bosco Verticale translating to Vertical Forest.

Designed by Stefano Boeri, this innovative residential complex features two towers adorned with over 9,000 plants and 1,000 trees, making it a marvel of sustainable architecture, promoting biodiversity in an otherwise concrete jungle.

Stop for a coffee at Illy Cafe in the square while enjoying the extraordinary views.

4:00 PM – Shopping or Spa

As the fashion capital of the world, Milan offers an unmatched shopping experience. Venture over to Corso Buenos Aires, the longest shopping street in Milan, or explore the upscale Quadrilatero della Moda for high-end fashion.

7:30 PM – Risotto alla Milanese for dinner

You can’t leave Milan without savoring an authentic Risotto alla Milanese. This creamy, saffron-infused rice dish is a true classic and a highlight of Milanese cuisine, known for its striking golden color.

For the best experience, pair it with Ossobuco, a flavorful braised veal shank that’s often served with marrow, providing a rich and satisfying meal.

I highly recommend the risotto alla Milanese at Risoelatte, in the nostalgic ambiance of the 1960s. Alternatively, consider Ristorante Galleria, which boasts gorgeous views of the magnificent Duomo, albeit at a higher price tag.

Getting to Milano

Milan is a major hub with excellent connections by air, train, and road.

By Air: Fly into Malpensa Airport, Milan’s main international gateway. From there, hop on the Malpensa Express train for a quick ride into the city center. Alternatively, Linate Airport is a convenient choice for many travelers.

By Train: Arrive at Milano Centrale, the city’s main train station with direct access to various parts of Italy and Europe. It’s a striking architectural marvel and, more importantly, a key transit hub. Be sure not to confuse it with Milano Porta Garibaldi, another important station serving various regional routes.

By Bus: Milan’s bus services connect various regions, with many terminating at Milan’s central areas like Piazza Duca d’Aosta, near Milano Centrale.

By Car: You can easily reach Milan by rental car via A1 or A4. Though Milan is car-friendly, parking can be a challenge in the heart of the city. Park at one of the designated public parking lots on the outskirts, such as those in Famagosta or Lampugnano, and take public transport into the city center.

Getting around Milan

The historic city center is best explored by foot but navigating wider Milan is a breeze with its superb public transportation system, which includes buses, trams, the metro, and trains. Throw in a plethora of taxis and Uber drivers, and you’re all set.

Milan’s extensive tram routes offer a convenient, efficient, and budget-friendly way to explore the city while soaking in the sights.

The Metro is another fantastic option, providing quick and comprehensive coverage of nearly all areas in Milan. Fast and reliable, it’s a commuter’s best friend.

Best time to visit Milan

Milan dazzles no matter when you visit. For the best weather, spring and autumn are ideal, although be prepared for a bit of a crowd.

Winter, while less popular, transforms the city into a magical wonderland. Summer, especially August, is surprisingly quiet but can get scorching hot.
