Where to Stay in Ostuni, Puglia
Choosing where to stay in Ostuni is not as straightforward as book the prettiest whitewashed room and call it a day. Ostuni is stunning but the best area might not be what you think.
I visited Ostuni during my Puglia road trip and ended up coming back twice. Partly because I loved it, partly because the weather was aggressively uncooperative the first time. Classic travel humbling.
I stayed just outside the old town because I wanted easier parking and luggage logistics, and honestly, I’d make the same choice again.
.
That’s the thing with hotels in Ostuni: the most atmospheric places are often deep in the old town, where the white lanes, staircases, and views are beautiful, but not always practical.
If you have heavy luggage, a rental car, or mobility concerns, some of the best places to stay in Ostuni may actually be just outside the centro storico or in a countryside masseria.

Where to Stay in Ostuni – Best (and Worst) Areas
Choosing where to stay in Ostuni is mostly about how much charm you want versus how much logistical pain you’re willing to tolerate.
The old town is the prettiest place to stay, where most Ostuni attractions are located, but it’s also full of stairs, narrow lanes, limited car access, and luggage moments that build character against your will.
For a short romantic stay, stay in or near the Ostuni Old Town. For a Puglia road trip, I’d usually recommend staying just outside the old town or booking a countryside masseria nearby. You’ll still get the White City views, but with easier parking, more space, and fewer suitcase wheels braking off.
Best Areas to Stay in Ostuni
Here’s a quick breakdown of the best areas to stay in Ostuni:
- Just Outside the Old Town is the smartest area for many travelers, especially if you’re driving. Stay near the edge of the historic center, around places like Piazza della Libertà, Corso Vittorio Emanuele II, or the lower town streets within walking distance of the centro storico. You’ll get easier parking, better value, fewer stairs, and still be close enough to walk into the old town for dinner.
- Ostuni Old Town is the best area to stay in Ostuni if you want atmosphere, restaurants, views, and the full White City experience. This is where you’ll find whitewashed lanes, staircases, small piazzas, aperitivo spots, the cathedral, and those sunset views over the olive groves. It’s beautiful, but not ideal if you have heavy luggage, mobility issues, or a car you need to park nearby.
- Countryside / Masserias outside Ostuni is best for road trips, pools, parking, and a slower Puglia stay. This is where you’ll find some of the best accommodation near Ostuni. You’ll need a car, but the payoff is huge if you want a proper Puglia base rather than just a city stay.
Is Ostuni safe? Any Unsafe Areas to Avoid?
Ostuni is generally safe for visitors, and there aren’t any major tourist areas I’d tell you to avoid completely.

Just Outside the Old Town — best for parking, views, and easier logistics
Staying just outside Ostuni Old Town is the smartest choice if you want the White City experience without dealing with the full old-town obstacle course.
You’ll still be within walking distance of Piazza della Libertà, the cathedral, restaurants, bars, and sunset viewpoints, but you’ll usually have easier luggage access and better parking options.
This is the area I stayed in because I wanted to enjoy Ostuni without turning arrival day into a suitcase-and-stairs situation.
This area works especially well if you’re visiting Ostuni as part of a Puglia road trip. You can walk into the old town for dinner, come back easily, and avoid squeezing your rental car into streets that were clearly not built with modern mirrors in mind.

Ostuni Old Town / Centro Storico — best for atmosphere, restaurants, and romantic short stays
Ostuni Old Town is the best area to stay in Ostuni if you want the full White City experience: whitewashed lanes, staircases, little piazzas, sea-and-olive-grove views, and dinner just a few minutes from your room.
This is the prettiest part of town, especially around the Cathedral, the old walls, and the upper historic lanes. It’s also where Ostuni feels most atmospheric in the evening, when the day-trippers thin out and the whole place turns warm and golden.
That said, the old town is not the easiest area logistically. Expect stairs, narrow lanes, limited car access, and accommodations inside historic buildings. It’s gorgeous, but it’s not exactly designed for giant suitcases and dramatic overpacking. Ask me how I know.
Ostuni Old Town at a Glance
- Best for: First-time visitors, couples, atmosphere, restaurants, short stays
- Known for: Whitewashed lanes, Ostuni Cathedral, old walls, views, romantic boutique stays
- Pros: Most scenic area, walkable to restaurants and bars, best evening atmosphere
- Cons: Stairs, limited parking, difficult luggage access, some rooms can be small or quirky
- Eat: Book a table with a view if you can — Borgo Antico and Bar Perso are great sunset picks
- Do: Wander the upper lanes, visit the Cathedral, walk the old walls, and stay out for sunset
Stay here if you want Ostuni to feel special from the second you step outside. For one or two nights, it’s the most memorable base.
If you’re driving through Puglia, though, read the arrival instructions carefully before booking. Some hotels can help with parking or transfers, while others will leave you and your suitcase to develop a very personal relationship with the stairs.

Countryside / Masserias outside Ostuni — best for pools, parking, and Puglia road trips
The countryside outside Ostuni is the best place to stay if you’re doing a Puglia road trip and want space, parking, a pool, and a slower pace than the old town.
This is where Ostuni really shines for accommodation. You’ll find restored masserias, boutique rural hotels, olive-grove hideaways, and private villas with views back toward the White City.
It’s less convenient for wandering out to dinner, but much better if you want that classic Puglia mix of stone walls, silvery olive trees, long lunches, and not fighting for a parking spot.

Accommodation here ranges from intimate agriturismi to high-end masserias and private villa-style stays.
Some are true masserias, while others are rural homes or boutique countryside hotels, so focus less on the label and more on the setting, parking, pool, and distance from town.
